Welcome to our Practical Self-Defense general information page. According to the U.S. Department of Justice there are over 7 million violent crimes committed each year. A violent crime is defined as rape, sexual assault, domestic violence, robbery, aggravated assault, and simple assault. Even scarier, estimates range as high as 45% of violent crimes go unreported every day. Every 3 seconds someone is violently assaulted. Since you started reading this paragraph 3-4 people have been the victim of a violent assault. 4 out of 4 people in the U.S will be the victim or intended victim of a physical or sexual assault, rape, robbery, abduction or murder.
The Practical Self-Defense courses at 540 Tactical are without question, based entirely on reality and teach extremely effective combative techniques, also known as "combatives." After many years of training in Krav Maga, Judo, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Enshin Karate, Shotokan Karate, Boxing and Wun Hop Kun Do Kung Fu we have come to the conclusion that each of these disciplines are great in their own right and we deeply respect the various martial arts styles as well as the more combative disciplines like Krav Maga.
That said, our personal experience in law enforcement, on the street, and in the ring has given us a unique perspective on survival that is not rooted in hypothetical theory or You Tube videos, but rather on highly advanced studies of actual combat experience and real life fights. These studies have proven that it takes the following four essentials to SAVE yourself in any threatening physical encounter.
Our defensive combatives utilize these four essentials to create the muscle memory required to execute effective techniques under stress. Simply put, we believe that less is more and we can help you quickly weed out the unnecessary habits and help you learn some very basic skills that may very well save your life.
It is our belief that the first step in surviving a threatening physical encounter is to avoid it if at all possible. Therefore, in addition to learning specific combative techniques, all of our defensive tactics courses emphasize constant situational awareness, avoidance and pre-attack recognition skills.
Practical Self-Defense-1 lays the foundation of what our combatives are all about and how they differ from a martial art. You will learn about the ugly realities of threatening confrontations and how to both recognize and avoid them. In addition, you will also learn several key elements of balance and base as well as very effective techniques to escape from common grabs and escape an attacker.
Practical Self-Defense-2 teaches simple and effective combatives as well as the importance of developing a warrior mindset, In addition, you will learn the essence of street rules as well what disparity factors are and how to identify and overcome them.
Practical Self-Defense-3 introduces several additional combatives to effectively escape from a variety of grabs, locks and pins as well as other highly effective techniques from the ground.
Practical Self-Defense-4 pulls everything together from Practical Self-Defense-1, Practical Self-Defense-2 and Practical Self-Defense-3 teaching you how to quickly analyze any situation and how to apply the right combative principle. You will also learn some more advanced combative techniques to put in your toolbox.
The Practical Self-Defense courses at 540 Tactical are not designed to make you the next UFC Champion, or a Black Belt Diva. Instead they have been designed with this simple principle in mind; to equip you with the skills necessary to prevail in a violent physical attack and how to get away to safety.
Therefore, we recommend these courses for just about everyone as there is nothing more terrifying and ugly than a
violent personal physical encounter. As with any course, please feel free to contact us via email or simply call with any questions.
